How do we know it was a "he" and not a "she" doing the teaching? I understand how "them" (acc/pl/masc) applies to the direct object. How are we at this stage to be sure of the gender of the "he/she/it" (subject) who is doing the teaching?

As it stands we couldn't be sure. If it were in context e.g., Lk 4:31 we would know it was "he"
