For an Informed Love of God
Fun Things to Say in Greek
Hello
The formal way to say “hello” is χαίρειν.
If you are saying “hi” to one friend, you say, χαῖρε. If it were speaking to a group of friends, it would be χαίρετε.
Goodbye
If you are saying goodbye to one person, you say, ἔρρωσο.
If you are saying goodbye to more than one person, say, ἔρρωσθε.
Thank you
The Modern Greek word for “thanks” is ευχαριστώ. This is basically the same as in Koine. Jesus would have said, εὐχαριστῶ σοι, when he wanted to say “thank you.”
Love
Tell someone that Jesus loves them. If you are speaking to one person, you would say, ὁ Ἰησοῦς σε ἀγαπᾷ.
How would you tell a group of people that Jesus loves them? ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὑμᾶς ἀγαπᾷ. Here's how to count 1 through 10.
Sir
To address a man as “Sir” or “Mr,” say, κύριε. To say “Miss” or “Mrs.,” say, κυρία.
I am well
πῶς ἔχεις is, “How are you?” εὖ ἔχω or καλῶς ἔχω is, “I am well.”
κακῶς ἔχω is, “I am not well.”
Yes and no
ναί is “Yes.”
οὐ is “No.”

Singing
I hope you have been singing Greek songs well before this chapter, but here is a familiar tune. You can download the sheet music and hear my friend sing it on the class website.
ὁ Ἰησοῦς με ἀγαπᾷ, | Jesus me he-loves |
ὅτι γραφὴ κηρύσσει· | because Scripture proclaims; |
παιδία εἰσιν αὐτῷ, | Children are to-him, |
ἀσθένουσι δύναται. | They are weak; he is strong |
ναί, Ἰησοῦς ἀγαπᾷ, | Yes, Jesus loves, |
ναί, Ἰησοῦς ἀγαπᾷ, | Yes, Jesus loves, |
ναί, Ἰησοῦς ἀγαπᾷ, | Yes, Jesus loves, |
ἡ γραφὴ κηρύσσει. | The Scripture proclaims. |
