Try to identify the grammatical category of each bolded verb below (e.g., inceptive imperfect) and explain the different translations.

Matt 4:6

NIV. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down.”

Matt 5:41

NIV. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

Matt 9:21

NIV. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

ESV. for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”

NASB. for she was saying  to herself, “If I only  touch His garment, I will  get well.”

Matt 20:27

NASB. Whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.

ESV. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant

Matt 27:30

ESV. And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.

NASB. They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.

NIV. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

Mark 14:72

NASB. Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before  a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”  And he began to weep. 

ESV. And immediately the rooster crowed za second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will bdeny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.*

Luke 3:9

ESV. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

NIV. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Luke 7:35

NIV. But wisdom is proved right by all her children.

Acts 9:34

How can the present tense describe a continuous action and yet Jesus heals him instantly?

NIV. “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up.

Rom 3:10

NIV. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.”

Rom 5:5

NIV. God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Rom 6:17

ESV. But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.

NIV. But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.

Rom 7:19

NRSV. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.

ESV. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

1 Cor 3:16

How many people does it take to be the temple of God?

ESV. Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

NIV. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

NLT. Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?

1 Cor 11:26

NIV. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 

2 Cor 8:9

NIV. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
