There is much more to this word than we are presenting here. Its form changes considerably in its different genders. ou|toV is covered in detail in chapter 13. As an adjective it means "this" (singular) and "these" (plural), and as a noun it means "this one."

Revelation 20:14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This (houtos | οὗτος | nom sg masc) is the second death, the lake of fire.
Revelation 21:5 And the one seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And he said, “Write it down, for these (houtoi | οὗτοι | nom pl masc) words are trustworthy and true.”
Revelation 21:7 The one who conquers will inherit these (tauta | ταῦτα | acc pl neut) blessings, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
