When I did this exercise, I somehow knew that "alla" could not mean "other/another" in this context. I also substituted it for another word "rather". But I don't know why, or what kind of rule I need to have in mind in order to make a decision like this.

Justin, 

It looks to me that you are confusing αλλα for αλλος - the first meaning "but, yet, except" and the other mean "one other or another"
